/// Stunning contemporary impressionist paintings by Christina Nguyen

In an exclusive interview, painter talks about her artwork, inspiration and her trip to Brazil.

Christina Nguyen is a beautiful and young Ukrainian artist, creator of extraordinary paintings that are getting great response and admiration around the world. And when I say beautiful, I don’t just mean her physical attributes but rather her gentle, delicate way of facing life, the way she radiates and reflects this through the sensitivity of her magnetic pictures and her lovely way of being as well. She took a few moments out of her busy schedule to give us more information about her paintings and artistic career.

Every day we look for interesting and creative stuff to share on our channels. On one of my searches, I stumbled upon an amazing collection of urban paintings in oil on canvas, beautiful pictures that made me feel so good. I did not think twice and quickly published it on our fan page. whenever we share something there, we always give credit to the original creators, preferably by tagging to the artist’s fan page, if they have one.

She noticed the tagging and saw our fan page as having a fresh approach. After, she visited our site and greatly enjoyed what we had to offer. So much so that she wished to have her artwork exhibited here and to provide a brief summary of her experience and how she creates her amazing paintings.

We divided this interview into eight themes for her to feel comfortable in her statements. Her worldview is pure poetry.

ORIGIN

People are normally surprised to know I am from Ukraine as I don’t typically look Ukrainian. My mother is Ukrainian with Polish roots while my father is Vietnamese and I was born in Ukraine.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

I have painted since I was a child. My bedroom walls were covered in my drawings according to my mom. However, there were periods of time when I didn’t paint. I was trying to avoid the sad fate of many artists and thought I would only paint when I could afford to, which happened about 5 years ago. This is when I started to paint a lot.

BASE / WORKPLACE

I am based wherever I live. I have travelled and lived in different places like Vienna and Hong Kong.

Now, I’m back to my roots in Ukraine. That’s where I have my studio now but I don’t know how long I will stay there.

INSPIRATION

Beauty inspires me. Whether it’s a woman or a city street or the mood of the day. There has to be something beautiful in it. Sometimes I see something and I feel it under my skin that it’s something special. A moment that won’t repeat, but I want to remember it and therefore I will paint it.

My source of inspiration could be anything. The voice of the woman I hear behind me in a bar, which makes me want to turn around and look at her, but instead I simply try to imagine how she is still searching for the love of her life. A woman standing at a crossroads in the rain without an umbrella, waiting for someone and I wonder whom she is waiting for while looking so desperate.

A couple kissing for an hour at a train station in San Francisco in the early morning in front of a cafe where I was drinking my morning tea, suffering from insomnia. And I kept watching this couple so full of love, which inspired the painting “Never Let Me Go in San Francisco”. Whenever I look at this painting, I wonder if this couple is still in love but to me they forever are.

When I look around, my world is so full of stories that are simply waiting to be written down. Streets are full of stories that give me inspiration. Stories I see on the streets inspire me.

I see a woman in a cafe, drinking tea, looking out the window, and she has a glance and way she touches her hair, then I start to imagine her story. So I go home with that story and paint it.

Besides that, of course, I draw inspiration from looking at works of other painters. Whenever I arrive somewhere, I love to find museums or art galleries and just go and see paintings. It beings me great joy and inspiration which perhaps will not result in a painting, but generally contributes to my passion for living.

FAVOURITE THEMES

I love painting rain, twilight and the urban landscapes. I love walking in cities when it’s raining and the day is over, but the it’s not quite nighttime yet. To me it’s the most mystical combination when miracles can happen.

I also love to paint women or couples with their faces hidden.

Lately I enjoy painting ballet dancers, which is related to my passion for ballet.

ADMIRABLE ARTISTS

I admire talented people who create things that have influenced me. Works of Remarque, Hemingway, Stefan Zweig, William Somerset Maugham, Ken Elton Kesey. Music by Melody Gardot and Leonard Cohen. I love works of contemporary painters such as Jeremy Mann, Gregory Thielker and Hsin-Yao Tsen. My favourite impressionists of all times are Monet, Degas, Morisot, Marie Bracquemond among many others.

BRAZIL & BRAZILIAN ARTISTS

I love Brazil and Rio has always been on my list of places I wanted to visit. In fact, it’s on my list of top 5 favourite cities on earth. I came to Brazil last November, spending most of my time in Rio de Janeiro and I also went to see Iguaçu Falls.

Rio is amazing. It’s one of the most vibrant cities full of contrasts and is beautiful to paint. Brazilian people are happy living in the most beautiful part of the world, and maybe that’s what brings them joy and peace.

And I think they understood the concept of life that many people are still trying to understand which is the concept of “saudade” – something that always remains when the love is gone, a recollection of beautiful experiences, feelings and places which once made you happy. Something that makes you appreciate every moment before it is gone. And I love this.

I didn’t get a chance to learn about different Brazilian artists, but I loved one who I consider a true artist, who creates such beautiful, breathtaking pieces. I love Oscar Niemeyer and what he did. I think he is one of the most talented artists of this time. And every building he did is a piece of art.

EXHIBITIONS

Yes, I did have a couple of exhibitions of my works in Hong Kong and Switzerland. But actually I don’t often exhibit my works and I never initiate this process myself.

I think the possibility of today to show the artwork to the whole world online without having to do a physical exhibition and limit your audience to a certain city or region or country is something that gives new opportunities to the artists.
